How Does Mental Health at Work Affect Employee Productivity?

Depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year in lost productivity (WHO, 2021). 1 in 5 adults face mental health challenges each year. This means the impact of mental health isn’t isolated to life outside the office. A significant portion of the workforce is dealing with anxiety, burnout, and other mental health concerns daily. In fact, 56% of employees say stress and anxiety affect their work performance.

Supporting mental health can lead to happier, more productive teams. In fact, for every $1 invested in mental health treatment, there’s a $4 return in improved health and productivity (WHO, 2019). 86% of employees treated for depression report improved work performance (Center for Workplace Mental Health, 2021). Only 50% of employees believe their workplace openly discusses mental health (Mind Share Partners, 2019).

These stats show just how important mental health is in the workplace. They also highlight the potential for positive change through mental health support and open discussions.
